A personal note from Sam:

When I first started offering classes in 2001, I had no idea how to enroll people.

And I made every mistake in the book:

I undercharged.

I was overly lax about payment plans.

I occasionally got stiffed, which really hurt my feelings.

I was too shy to follow up with people who’d said they were interested, and I just sort of moped around, hoping they would join.

I gave away a lot of free advice.

I didn’t know that “enthusiasm over receiving free advice” was not the same as a “sale.”

I had no idea who my ideal client was, so I let anyone and everyone in. Which, lucky for me, mostly worked out — except for a few incredibly bad apples.

I didn’t know what to say when people indicated they were interested in working with me.

I had no system.

I was giving away the farm.

People would hand their business cards and because I had NO IDEA WHAT TO SAY, I let those cards pile up on my desk as I procrastinated and felt terrible and struggled and stared at my ridiculously low bank account.

Not fun.
