Here’s how insidious habits can be:

According to a 2015 study from Cornell, if you keep your cereal on your counter, you will likely end up weighing 20 pounds more than people who put their cereal in the cupboard.

Why?

Because a glimpse of the cereal box produces a cue to your habit-driven brain that says, “Oh, I’m hungry. I’ll have a bowl of cereal. That’s a nice, healthy snack.”

And, of course, you’re not hungry, and those extra calories add up – to the tune of an extra pound per month (or more) – and within a year, you’ve gained what my British-born husband would call a full stone.

Charles Duhigg teaches that we get on a habit trail by this sequence of three subconscious steps:

  1. CUE: see the cereal
  2. ROUTINE: pour a bowl of cereal
  3. REWARD: eat yummy cereal

And once the neural pathways that link these behaviors have been traveled enough, you find yourself unconsciously on the trail that leads to what you don’t want. (And probably saying to yourself, “Gosh golly! Why don’t these jeans fit?”)

But….you can change course by:

  1. SEEING: the cue that is leading you astray
  2. CHOOSING: what you want
