Lighten Up & Get Rich Quick

Lighten Up & Get Rich Quick

— a limited series about unconventional economics —

I made a special (short) video just for coaches, healers, practitioners, body workers, teachers and therapists…

You know the world needs your good work.

Isn’t it time you found a lighter, easier way to think about getting paid for the work you love?

Yours,

“And the money has hit my account! I was able to walk my very first coaching client through her objections and got her to yes. Amazing. I just followed Sam’s script which removed 97% of the anxiety!! Thanks Samantha Bennett!” – M.C., current member of Sam’s Pro Club

How to Price Your Goods & Services

How to Price Your Goods & Services

— a limited series about unconventional economics —

“I chicken out when it comes to stating my price.”

“I tried to raise my prices, but then people say they can’t afford it.”

“I know my work is worth a bundle – but really – no one would pay me that much.”

Luckily, these common misconceptions are easy (and fun!) to fix.

EASY ACTION STEP:

“I chicken out when it comes to stating my price.”

This is not an economic issue.

This is a courage issue.

Pretend that you charge ten times more than you currently do, and say that number out loud ten times in a row. So if you’ve been charging $100, you might say, “I charge $1000….How much do I charge? Oh, it’s just $1000…..If you want what I do, it’s $1000….I only charge $1000….I get $1000 for what I do….” etc. Do this 10 times a day for 10 days in a row and see how your mindset, your beliefs and your actions begin to shift.

“I tried to raise my prices, but then people say they can’t afford it.”

This is not a sign that your prices are too high. In fact, it’s probably a sign that your prices are too low, because your people are not understanding the VALUE of what you do.

Think of a customer story (real or imagined) that conveys the true value of what you do. Think of the deeper, ongoing results people get from your work.

(Obviously, if it’s an imagined story, you don’t want to present it as real, but you can say, “My work affects everyone differently, but my hope is that people get results like X, Y and Z….”)

For example, “I gave this client a series of 10 massages, and she told me she was feeling so calm and centered that she and her teenage daughter were actually having real conversations again! Imagine how much it’s worth to her to heal that relationship…”

Or, “This client bought some of my art to display in her office, and not only does she feel inspired every time she looks at it, her new assistant said she knew the job was right for her when she saw that piece. Imagine how much it’s worth to have the perfect assistant…”

“I know my work is worth a bundle – but no one will pay me that much.”

Usually when people say that to me, what they are really saying is, “I wouldn’t pay me that much.” Which is true.

You wouldn’t pay that much for what you do, because you don’t have your customer’s problem.

You, my dear, are not your ideal client.

I also hear this is when people have been trying to market to their friends and family.

Your friends and family are not your ideal clients, either.

Spend 5 minutes dreaming up a mental picture of your ideal client. Imagine how old they are, the house they live in, the clothes they like, the tv shows they watch. Imagine how much money they have already spent trying to solve the problem that you can fix for them. Imagine that they are looking for you right now.

Use that daydream to inspire one action you could take to find that person in real life.

Try one of these and let me know how it goes, OK?

Yours,

P.S. This post is part of a limited series exploring the world of business for artists, healers, writers, coaches, creatives, and anyone who thinks they can’t make money doing what they love.

P.P.S. Here’s what I know for sure: taking baby steps like this is the way to grow into your prosperous, sustainable life. Even just 15 minutes a day can take you there. But you’re going to need a supportive community, some solid training in entrepreneurial concepts and some good advice (both practical and spiritual) from someone who’s done it already.

And that’s what Sam’s Pro Club is all about – and you can get started for just $12.32/day (annual subscription).  Check it out here – S.

“I told [this famous publisher] about my book idea and your suggestion to use the prompts in an email series. In the middle of describing this, he interrupted to say he wants to publish THAT book. I almost fell off my chair. I’m both over the moon and hyperventilating. And sooooooo motivated! Just had to share the news and share my gratitude. In large part, thanks to you and all I’ve learned from you, I know I can make all of this – and more – happen.” – B.J., recent alumni of Sam’s Pro Club

Hey, you – don’t get a j-o-b!

Hey, you – don’t get a j-o-b!

– a limited series about unconventional economics –

All you have ever wanted to do was to help people.

You have an innate gift for working with people’s bodies and minds.

This healing work is so easy for you, you kinda feel bad charging for it.

And you could get a j-o-b…

Except that the same sensitivity that makes you such an excellent healer also makes it very difficult for you to sit under fluorescent lights, deal with toxic environments or endure busy work.

So, what’s a smart cookie like you to do?

The first step is to stop devaluing your abilities.

The second step is to realize that there are nice people will happily pay you for your work.

This is both harder and easier than it sounds.

EASY ACTION STEP:

Make a quick list of the skills you have, the way they help and the people who might need that.

For example:

A SKILL I have is: listening

This HELPS: people to hear & know their own truth

A PERSON who might need this is: someone who is in a transition point in their lives (graduating, changing careers, empty nester…)

Another SKILL I have is: sound healing

This HELPS: people relax and feel good without drugs

A PERSON who might need this is: recovering addicts who need a healthy way to de-stress; people who want to relax but don’t like massage

Another SKILL I have is: reiki

This HELPS: calm the mind and improve energetic flow; encourage the body’s natural healing

A PERSON who might need this is: someone who feels like they’ve tried everything & still doesn’t feel well

See – this isn’t too hard, now is it? It’s even kinda fun.

Guess what – this SKILL/HELPS/PERSON structure is the beginning of what they call a business plan.

(And here you thought a business plan had to be some big, long, complicated document with graphs and stuff. Nope.)

I love making this stuff easy.

Personal Branding for Creatives (the Easy Way!)

My Heroes

Confused about personal branding? Not sure how to describe you or your work in a way that doesn’t feel weird?

You’re not alone. Personal branding is complicated for everyone.

The problem in creating a personal brand is that we are on the inside of our own heads, having an interior experience of ourselves. We have never been on the receiving end of our own energy. We have never flirted with us. We have never seen us from the side, or from across the room.

At the same time, everyone else on the planet is having an exterior experience of us. They don’t share our perspective and they can’t hear the voices in our heads : )

So we need to come up with a vocabulary that describes us truthfully. One that captures both our internal experience of ourselves as well as everyone else’s exterior experience of us.

Luckily, we can do that pretty quickly, because you’ve been being you for some time now. We just have to find the right words.

Experiment with this quick 20-minute video. I bet you’ll be delighted with what you discover. Leave a comment and let me know, OK?

Beautiful Writer’s Group

Beautiful Writer’s Group

For my last installment in this “backstage” look at the world of email and personal development, we’re looking at my dear friend Linda Sivertsen and the Beautiful Writer’s Group.

Linda Sivertsen and The Beautiful Writer’s Group (and me!)

The Beautiful Writer’s Group is a community of writers who get support, insights, cheer-leading and practical advice from our private Facebook page and a monthly coaching call run by me and Linda. It’s super-inexpensive and lots of fun.

Linda’s Unique Style

Linda is known worldwide as the Book Mama because she is so genuinely loving. She adores writers and has a true calling to support them. She has published several bestsellers herself and she is friends with every cool agent and publisher in the biz. Several times a year, she leads her Carmel Writing Retreat, where she spends a week with 6 women writers and a gourmet chef, helping them craft their book into something writable and, moreover, salable.

If you look in the “Acknowledgments” of some of your favorite books, you will probably see Linda’s name – that’s how influential she is. She is forever connecting writers with agents, agents with book proposals, and publishers with agents. Because she doesn’t charge for any of this matchmaking, she is trusted by one and all.

She also hosts the Beautiful Writer’s Podcast, which features such guests as Elizabeth Gilbert, Dr. Brené Brown, Seth Godin, Glennon Doyle Melton, Marianne Williamson, Arianna Huffington, Steven Pressfield, Martha Beck, Dani Shapiro, Mary Karr, Leeza Gibbons, Gretchen Rubin, Jillian Lauren…all of them going deep and telling the real TRUTH about their writing practice. It’s a great show, and you can find it on iTunes, SoundCloud and here: http://bookmama.com/category/beautiful-writers-podcast/.

Idea You Could Borrow for Yourself

Think about ways that you could:

1) Create a community that supports your tribe

– Private or Public Facebook groups are easy and free

MeetUps allow you to create and advertise live local events for a low cost

Zoom Conferencing allows you to easily video conference online

2) Provide ongoing value to that community

– Offer wisdom, resources and outside experts

– Perhaps most meaningfully, a way for them to connect with each other – a directory, perhaps?

– Send a free daily email to inspire them and keep them on track

3) Create ongoing recurring revenue for you

– If you have 100 subscribers at even just $10/month, that’s an extra $1000 without too much additional work

– You can offer your membership special deals, up-sells and opportunities to generate even more revenue and serve them better

– You can generate affiliate and sponsorship revenue by giving trusted businesses occasional access to your tribe

I hope you’ve enjoyed this 12-part series, and I hope it has you dreaming up ways you can grow your business, make more moolah and help more people.

Let me know what actions you’re inspired to take, OK? You know I love to hear from you.

Yours,

Sam

Quizzicle?

Quizzicle?

We’re going to look at one of the hottest “freebies” there is and how it’s being used by one of the hottest teachers I know.

Sage Levine of Conscious Women Entrepreneurs

Sage has created a terrific quiz: What type of Workshop Leader are YOU?

——> CLICK HERE to take the quiz & get the results emailed to you

Sage’s Unique Style

Sage is down-to-earth and fun-loving and quite a bit smarter than your average bear. She focuses her work exclusively on women – even her own team is all women – and she truly believes that a feminine approach to leadership and business can not only transform lives, but indeed, the planet.

Sage loves to travel and she loves philanthropy, so she’s structured her business in such a way that she takes several long trips each year. She’s been everywhere from the Amazon to Africa, and I happen to know that she took her entire team to Hawaii this year – isn’t that cool?

As someone who has built a seven-figure business from scratch, Sage really knows her stuff. She’s a great teacher with a strong business philosophy, and she really is working to make the world a better place.

—–> I recommend getting on her list and taking advantage of her multiple freebies (start with the quiz : )

Sage’s Smart Strategy

A quiz is a fantastic way to invite people into your list. Not only are quizzes FUN, but they have the added benefit of allowing you to learn a lot about your prospects.

Quizzes also leverage one of the most powerful tools in marketing: intellectual curiosity. When faced with a compelling question like, “What kind of Workshop Leader are YOU?” even grizzled veterans like me want to know the answer!

Finally, quizzes are cool because they invite immediate engagement. The sooner you can get people INTERACTING with your material (clicking, sharing, commenting, rating, sharing….) the better off you are.

Idea You Could Borrow for Yourself

What ONE piece of information would help you communicate more intelligently with your clients? Could you make a quiz designed to elicit that data?

For example, if you’re a health coach, you might want to know more about your clients’ eating habits, so you could create a quiz called, “What’s Your Diet Downfall? Take this quiz to discover the sneaky nutritional habits that are ruining your waistline!”

Or if you were a visual artist, you could create a quiz called, “Does It Have to Match the Couch? Take this quiz to discover how sophisticated an art-buyer you are!”

Even just playing around with this concept can lead to some juicy ideas, yes?

Let me know what you come up with, OK?

—-> And be sure to check out Sage’s quiz and see what you would do the same, or differently!

Yours,

Sam
